Chicago is the home of the hot dog, and Wiener's Circle, a stand in Lincoln Park, sells the authentic thing. A steak at a real Chicago steakhouse such as Gene & Georgetti is a must. And for traditional Chicago deep-dish pizza, try Lou Malnati's. The city also boasts more sophisticated restaurants by a new generation of celebrity chefs, such as Grant Achatz at Alinea.

Culture

Chicago's downtown area - known as The Loop - has many beautiful buildings, including the black aluminum Sears Tower - the highest in Chicago (and the US) - best viewed from a boat. One of the three best in the world, the Chicago Symphony plays at the superb Symphony Centre. The Art Institute of Chicago is equally worth your time.

Shopping

Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile is packed full of shopping malls and big name stores. Neighbourhood shopping areas such as Lincoln Park or Wicker Park offer one-of-a-kind stores where you can usually get great bargains.

Getting around

Public transport is one of the best in the country with most visitors using the ‘EL'. Driving and parking can be a challenge but taxis are easy to find.
